エミリーさん（ＡＬＴ　Ｔｅａｃｈｅｒ）がレポートしてくださりました。

At the chat salon hosted by Moria International Friendship Association,
you can have the opportunity to enjoy speaking English in a relaxed environment.
It is held on the first Saturday of every month from 10:00 to 12:00.

Japanese and foreigners alike are welcome to participate!

On December 3rd, the topic was the upcoming Christmas and New Year's holidays.

We also learned some interesting idioms:
"catch some Zs" = to be sleeping a short while.
"Where's your father?" "Oh, he's catching some Zs."
This refers to the sound of snoring - in English, we think it sounds like "zzzzzzzz."
You will often see that letter in comics when a character is sleeping!

"hold your horses" = be patient.
"Let's go right now, the tickets will be sold out." "Hold your horses!"
In a vehicle pulled by horses, you pull their reins to make them stop running.

エミリーさんコーナーでは、アメリカのクリスマスの様子をお話していただきました。

今日の予定、毎回プロジェクターで楽しい画像をみながら説明いたします。

毎回Today`s Idiom  コーナーで、おもしろい言い回しをお勉強！

その後、各テーブルごとにコーディネーターを囲んで

皆さん思い思いに、英語でおしゃべりに華をさかせておりました。

皆さまにとって今年はどんな1年でいらっしゃいましたでしょうか？

街のあちこちのクリスマスイルミネーションが素敵な季節となりました。

私共、”英語でおしゃべり”のサロンも毎回沢山の方にご参加いただき、

お陰様であっという間に2年目をむかえる事となりました。

ご参加いただきました皆さま、ありがとうございます。

英語の必要性を日々の生活の中でヒシヒシと感じる昨今です。

今後も沢山の方に、英語でおしゃべりできる楽しい場を展開していきたいと思っております。

スタッフは皆さんボランティアで各自の得意とする分野で活動しております。

今後も、私たちと共に、ボランティアで活動にご協力いただける方も

募集しております。

On November 3rd, in honor of Culture Day, the topic was Japanese culture.

We had a small explanation of the American holiday Thanksgiving, which will
be celebrated on November 22nd.

We also learned some interesting idioms:
Nodding off = to be falling asleep.
"The ceremony was so boring, I kept nodding off."

The tip of [one]'s tongue = to not quite remember something you know.
"What's his name again? It's on the tip of my tongue!"


The next Chat Salon will be December 1st, 10:00 - 12:00.
The topic will be Christmas and New Years.

スダさんは、日本の会社に勤めていらっしゃいます。
日本に来て約7年になるそうです。
現在、浦安国際交流協会　ＵＩＦA　の会員でもいらっしゃいます。

2012年　9月1日（土）　の活動

猛暑の八月、皆様お元気でお過ごしでいらっしゃいましたか？

9月になり、早く涼しくなってほしいものですね。

さて、9月の”英語でおしゃべり”の活動も沢山の方が
ご参加くださりまして、ありがとうございました。



ＭＩＦＡのＮｅｗ　メンバーになられました、

Ｍｒ．Ｏｓａｍｕ　Ｔａｋａｈａｓｈｉ　氏によるご自身の
留学先であった

”スコットランド”　の貴重なお話をいただきました。

The presentation was the introduction of Scotland and her historical and political characteristics, culture, famous figures brought up there, English dialect, and beautiful scenery. 

The first part was asking the audiences if they knew Scotland.  I explained where Scotland is (It is a part of the U,K. and so there is no such a country called イギリス in this world).  Then, I explained how Scotland deals with the rest of countries in the U.K. I also mentioned that Scottish people are predominantly Celtic people so that there has been various ethnic conflicts with England.  Furthermore, Scotland is divided between two major religions: Presbyterian Protestant and Roman Catholic.   I explained the audiences that Scottish football matches are related to the political and religious issues.  For example, when England is fighting with the other country, Scottish people tend to support the opponent country fighting with English team.  Whenever there is a match between Celtics (Catholic) and Rangers (Protestant), Scottish people become extremely serious and fanatic to observe this match.

The second part was about what Scotland is famous for.  As you can see the power point slide, I introduced Whisky, Nessie in Loch-Ness (I also mentioned there is a strange person who has been staying beside the loch to look for Nessie for more than 10 years),  Kilts (Men do not wear an underwear whenever they wear a Kilt!).  I also displayed names of famous figures brought up in Scotland (Please could you refer to the list shown in the power point slide? Thanks).

The third part was introducing Scottish English Dialect.  I picked up 8 examples.   (Please could you refer to the list shown in the power point slide? Thanks)

The last part was showing the photos of Scottish scenery I have taken during my stay there.   I showed Edinburgh (Capital), Dunblane (Where Andrew Murry was born and brought up, and I stayed for 1 year), Perth (The place I stayed in Scotland at the last time, and Famous for Salmon Fishing and the strategically important place for Sir Oliver Cromwell occupied to conquer Scotland), and Forth Bridge (Built and Connecting between Lothian (Where Edinburgh is located) and Fife (Where St. Andrews is located).

レギュラーメンバーで　元ＪＡＸA　の職員でいらした
藤森氏の　大変興味深いスピーチ　を堪能いたしました。

藤森様　貴重な資料と、お話をありがとうございました！

Fujimori-san, one of our regular participatns,（Participants）

delivered a short speech on Tanabata. for we

had Moriya-Chatsalon on the very day of Tanabata,

on 7th July.

He first explained etymology and origin of Tanabata,

and added the skelton of fairly tale on Orihime-boshi

and Hiko-boshi.

The current festivity on Tanabata was established in Edo era.

Celebration of Tanabata based on the Lunar calendar

would be more appropriate than on the Solar calendar.

Cosmology on the starry flow; Amanogawa, and two

personifed stars was slightly touched so that the

nature of the Milky Way; Amanogawa, might be

better understood, considering the relative postion

of our Solar system in the Milky Way Galaxy.

Emily's Corner:
The last Monday of May every year is Memorial day. This becomes a three-day weekend.
In Seattle where I am from, there is a famous annual event called the Northwest Folklife Festival.
This is a celebration of traditional music and crafts from all over the world.
It was founded in 1972 and is held at the Seattle Center.
Several thousand people participate, and over 250,000 come to visit the festival.

Emily here. We had a very exciting Chat Salon yesterday!

First, we were delighted to have Jörg from Germany join us.

He gave an interesting speech about  immigration, education, and nuclear power in Germany.

We learned a lot of fascinating facts. Thank you, Jörg!

In the afternoon, due to popular demand, we had our first lunch session! We had a delicious meal including sandwiches, fruit, and authentic German sausages.

I was grateful for the opportunity to play some Irish harp music while people ate. Thank you for listening!

After lunch, we played some fun games.
