Today I talked about St. Patrick's Day. It is a holiday held on March 17th. It started in Ireland, but now it is popular all over the world.
St. Patrick lived from about 387 to 461. He is famous for bringing Christianity to Ireland. There is also a legend that he got rid of all the snakes, but scientists say there has never been snakes on the island. His symbol is the shamrock, a three-leaved clover.
On this holiday, there are many parades and parties to celebrate Irish culture. Folk music such as the harp is popular. If you’d like to hear some live Irish harp music, come to MIFA on May 12th.
Ireland is a very green country – it’s even called “The Emerald Isle.” So it's important to wear something green on St. Patrick's Day. If you don't, you will be pinched by your friends!
In the city of Chicago, they dye the river green to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.
Another symbol is the leprechaun, who is a kind of fairy. If you can catch him, he will give you a lot of money. But he is very fast and clever, so he is hard to catch.
