さて、ドイツのお祭りについて、守谷市国際交流委員ヨークさんが
スピーチをしてくださいました。
General information:
-
Most of today’s festivals originally go back
to the church consecration festival of the villages, towns and cities (similar
to shrine festivals in Japan ).
They were held on the saint’s day of the specific church. Nowadays in many
villages/towns/cities those festivals still take place at the same time, but
they are more of a funfair and many people don’t know the origin of the
festival anymore.
Oktoberfest/Wiesn:
-
with about 6 million visitors every year the
biggest and most popular German folk festival and one of the biggest folk
festivals in the world
-
takes place in Munich = capital of the German State Bavaria
-
not rooted in the church consecration
festival à first
held in 1810, actually a horse race for the occasion of the wedding between
crown prince Ludwig von Bayern and princes Therese à big success à It was
decided to hold this festival every year.
-
In the following years the festival grew. First
lotteries, climbing trees and bowling alleys were added to the horse race à in 1818: the first
carousel
-
1819: The organization was taken over by the
city à Because
of its popularity the festival was prolonged and began earlier, in
temperature-wise mild September. (Only the last days of Oktoberfest are
actually in October.)
-
1880: The city allowed serving beer. à In order to be able
to accommodate more people the beer booths were turned into huge beer tents.
-
Now the biggest beer tent can accomodate
10.000 people.
-
Due to wars, epidemics or economical crisis Oktoberfest
has been canceled 24 times.
Kieler Woche – Kiel Week
-
Time Magazine (online, 25. June 2012): “There
are regattas, and then there's Kieler Woche, or Kiel Week. Every summer, the
city of Kiel , on Germany 's bracing north coast,
plays host to the world's largest sailing event. More than 3 million visitors
pour into town to cheer on 5,000 sailors from over 50 countries, taking part in
some 400 races on 11 courses. This year's event […] will culminate in an epic
flotilla of towering historical and military craft.”
-
Kiel is a city
at the Baltic Sea with approx. 240.000 inhabitants and it’s the capital of Germany ’s most
northern State Schleswig-Holstein.
-
Kiel Week is actually not a folk festival,
but a sports event. à 23. July
1882: 20 yachts started in a sailing regatta.
-
The event was very popular. à decision to repeat it
annually
-
Two years later (1884) à Next to the sailing
regatta also other boat races were held and the event got extended to last one
week. à always in
the last full week in June
-
The name “Kieler Woche” came from media
reports in 1894.
-
From 1889 Kaiser Wilhelm II took part in Kiel week regularly.
-
1914: The start of WWI interrupts Kiel Week. It
is not held during both WWs.
-
1936 and 1972: Kiel is the location of the sailing events of
the summer Olympics.
-
Until 1945: Kiel Week is only a sports event. After WWII,
in September 1947: one week folk festival called “Kiel in reconstruction”
-
1948: Kiel
week in June and “Kiel
in reconstruction” folk festival in September à from 1949: held at the same time (June) turning the mere
sports event into a folk festival
-
1950: Germany ’s president Theodor Heuss
opens the Kieler Woche. Ever since: Germany ’s presidents or chancellors
have opened the event (Chancellor Merkel: 2006 and 2008).
-
In 1979 the Olympic events in Kiel close with a parade
of big ships (windjammer parade). It was carried out in the following years as
well and is now one of the main events for spectators.
Werder Baumblütenfest – tree blossoms festival in Werder
-
the smallest of the 3 folk festivals I introduce
-
Werder is a small town of about 23.500
inhabitants south west from Berlin .
It’s west of Potsdam
and it’s an agricultural town known for it’s fruit products (cherries, apples,
strawberries).
-
The festival’s main idea is to cherish the
beautiful tree blossoms, when there’re in full bloom (like Japanese hanami).
-
18. March 1879: The association of local
fruit growers decide to announce the expected date of the full bloom of the
fruit trees in Berlin ’s
newspapers and engage themselves as tour guides, leading visitors to the most
beautiful spots. à their aim:
boosting their own businesses and the economy of Werder by attracting visitors
-
At the orchards one could watch the beautiful
blossoms while enjoying local products like cake and especially the local fruit
wines.
-
In the first year: 2 chartered trains from Berlin only for the Werder
Baumblütenfest brought thousands of visitors.
-
In the following years: growing visitor
numbers (on the main Sunday): 1893 à 10.000 guests, 1897 à 25.000,
1900 à ca. 50.000
-
growing popularity à festival got bigger à parade, funfair with carousels, booths and many stages
all over the city, laid back blossom watching at the orchards or coach rides
through the region also possible
-
Under Eastern German government (1949~1990)
the festival missed a lot of it’s original charm and character (e.g.
prohibition to sell fruit wine), but after the German reunion (1990) the
festival got back on track.
-
Since 1989 the festival is being opened with
a ball, at which the tree blossom queen is crowned She represents the city and
its agricultural industry for the coming year at various venues.
-
Nowadays approx. 500.000 people visit the
festival every year. 1998: 750.000 visitors = record; But It was the maximum
the small town could accommodate.
