2025.2.1.Sanntos  リポート

Our February chat centered around Setsubun,

a Japanese tradition marking the change of

 seasons.

A major focus of the discussion was mamemaki

 (bean-throwing), the well-known custom of

tossing roasted soybeans to drive away

evil spirits and invite good fortune.

Many groups reflected on whether this

tradition is slowly fading in modern Japan,

as fewer families seem to practice it as

they once did.

This led to a broader conversation about

how cultural traditions evolve over time

and how people find new ways to keep

 them alive.

We also explored the role of ogres and

 demons in Japanese folklore, discussing

their significance beyond Setsubun in

 myths and legends.

Wanting to share a bit of my own culture,

I briefly introduced two figures from

Brazilian folklore:

the Mula-sem-cabeça (Headless Mule),

a supernatural creature from old legends,

and the Curupira, a mischievous forest

guardian with backward feet.

Though different from Japan’s oni, these

beings serve a similar role in shaping

myths, warnings, and traditions in their

 respective cultures.

It was fascinating to see how every

culture has its own tales of mysterious

creatures! If you enjoy discovering and

exchanging stories like these,

we’d love for you to join our next chat!
